Digital Privacy: "Safer Sex" For the Internet Age

Many of us don't realize how much personal data we give away for free every day to parties that don't have our well-being in mind: Internet service providers, email providers, social media platforms, and governments. Many of them are passively trolling for our personal data--for profit, or just because they can and it might be useful later. When one is a member of a legally and socially vulnerable group, that can be huge.

Digital privacy isn't about hiding something illegal, taboo, or "bad." When someone has curtains on their windows, you don't think they must be hiding a meth lab in their living room. They just want some privacy. This workshop is about teaching how to hang some curtains, rather than invite corporations and governments to a front row seat of your personal life.

You might have nothing to hide, you might be the out-est person in the world, you might have no reason to think you would ever be targeted for personal investigation. Nonetheless, by participating in safer digital hygiene practices, you help make the world safer for those who are more vulnerable than you are.

This workshop will be a guided hands-on experience of basic digital privacy practices such as: strong, memorable passwords and password management, safer browsing, anonymous browsing, securely deleting files, social media settings, safer calls/chatting/emailing, and an introduction to more advanced practices. Please bring your devices such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets (and charging cables). Apps for Linux, Mac, Windows, Android, and IoS will all be covered to the best of my ability.
